Life after transplant: the WTGF at TTS 2026 in Sydney

In September 2026, the WTGF travelled to Sydney, Australia, for TTS 2026 – the 31st International Congress of The Transplantation Society, held at ICC Sydney, Darling Harbour.

Our session: life after transplant

On Tuesday 22 September (13:30–15:00, Room C4.2), the WTGF hosted a dedicated session: Life after transplant: Supporting movement, confidence and long-term recovery across all levels of ability.

The session explored:

  • the long-term journey after discharge from hospital;
  • building confidence through everyday activity;
  • the path from recovery to endurance sport;
  • the clinical perspective on safe activity;
  • a closing panel discussion.

The session was chaired by Chris Thomas, CEO of Transplant Australia, and Dr Kate Wyburn, nephrologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney.

The talks

  • Liz Schick, President, WTGF – The long-term transplant journey: What patients experience after discharge
  • Geoff Jessup, Transplant Australia (liver transplant recipient, 2016) – Movement when endurance is limited: Finding confidence through everyday activity
  • Kate Clark, WTGF Trustee and Sports Committee lead – From recovery to endurance sport: The transformative role of movement
  • Professor Geoff McCaughan, hepatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital – Clinical perspective: Encouraging safe physical activity after transplant
  • A closing panel discussion on supporting all patients to move

Living Forward in Sydney

Living Forward came too. At the WTGF stand, transplant professionals shared what Living Forward means from their side of the transplant journey – in a single word, through a 10-second challenge, and by personalising their own tote bags. Their one-word answers will feature in upcoming Living Forward pieces.

Living Forward is proudly sponsored by Abbott.
