PEDALLING WITH PURPOSE

The World Transplant Cycle Challenge Fundraiser 2023 rallied our global community to champion the cause of organ & tissue donation and encourage others to #havetheconversation about their wishes.

Running virtually for six weeks, participants could choose to cycle from 3 pre-set distances or create their own cycling goal. 101 heroes on two wheels joined from 24 countries, covering 17,945 kilometres collectively, while also fundraising for the WTGF. An incredible 218 generous donors contributed to the Cycle Challenge fundraiser, with £7,470 raised to support the ongoing work of the Federation. All contributions were used to expand the WTGF Youth Program and the further development of our Refit for Life! Rehabilitation & Wellness Program.

The Cycle Challenge was a huge success and showed the power of common goals and the potential to make a real difference together!

EVERY STRIKE IS A VICTORY

Recognizing its popularity among transplant recipients, the WTGF organized a fun World Transplant Virtual Tenpin Bowling Challenge to prepare for the 2023 World Transplant Games in Perth. The challenge ran online for two months, with 47 keen bowlers from 9 member countries joining.

Bowlers could compete in the Individual and Pairs category and submit multiple scores, with their best score uploaded to a bi-weekly Leaderboard. The challenge offered a ‘Best Averages’ competition for bowlers playing 3 rounds or more during the period and other fun prize giveaways. Certificates, medal pins, and special gift hampers were awarded.

It was great to see familiar and new faces in the bowling community with bowlers saying the challenge encouraged them to get out, have fun, and spend quality time with family and friends.

LET’S SWING INTO ACTION AND PLAY

Golf has been a key sport at the World Transplant Games for over 30 years, uniting transplant athletes worldwide to celebrate life.

Open to recipients and the extended transplant community, the World Transplant Virtual Golf Challenge 2022 brought keen and new golfers to compete against each other in a Strokeplay Medal Competition format. All handicap bands were welcomed, with golfers playing on their preferred local 18-hole golf course. Players could submit multiple scores during the 3-month challenge period, with their best score being added to the weekly Leaderboard.

53 golfers representing 14 countries participated with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to the Top 3 positions in each category and handicap band. Additional prizes included signed Lee Westwood Caps, WTGF-branded Polo Shirts, and luxury golf Gift Boxes.

The challenge saw impressive scores, with some golfers reporting having played their best rounds of golf in their lifetime.

STEP YOUR WAY 2 BETTER HEALTH

Supported by Novartis, the Fit for Life! Billion Steps Challenge 2021 returned for its third edition, inviting our community to stay active and celebrate the power of the gift of life. Launched virtually in September, the 70-day challenge took place on the MoveSpring platform, encouraging teams of 2-10 people to work towards a shared goal.

With over 2000 participants from 58 countries, the challenge ‘walked’ an incredible 1,226,440,954 steps! All forms of physical activity were accepted and converted to steps, recognizing that exercise and fitness come in different forms for different people. Along the way, milestones were unlocked with opportunities to win exciting prizes like Garmin Fitness Watches and GoPro cameras.

The “Donate Your Steps” campaign ran alongside the challenge engaging with groups outside of our community, raising awareness of the work of the WTGF, and our goal to promote organ & tissue donation worldwide.

GLOBAL UNITY IN MOTION

The 5K AnyWay was a unique event led by the Houston Sports Authority in 2021, after the cancellation of the 23rd World Transplant Games in Houston due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Designed to unite transplant recipients, donors, and supporters worldwide, this virtual event allowed participants to complete a 5K in any way they chose – whether walking, running, swimming, or even playing sports – between May 28 and June 4, 2021. The event successfully brought together a global community, raising awareness for organ donation and the importance of an active lifestyle for transplant recipients. Participants from around the world logged their 5Ks, contributing to an interactive map that tracked their progress and celebrated their efforts. The week culminated in the ‘Around the World AnyWay’ celebration, a virtual closing ceremony that highlighted the amazing stories of participants and showcased the strength and unity of the transplant community.

The 5K AnyWay event left a lasting legacy, proving that even in challenging times, the spirit of the World Transplant Games could thrive.

TO THE MOON AND BACK

Ready to inspire the global transplant community to walk one billion steps, the Fit for Life! Billion Steps Challenge 2020 ignited a journey to “walk” to the moon and back.

Running for 20 weeks, the challenge saw over 3000 participants in 717 teams from 64 countries walk an astounding 1,451,398,796 steps, surpassing the original billion steps target by 145%.

During the stress and anxiety of the COVID-19 pandemic, this event highlighted the success of transplantation while encouraging physical activity to promote wellbeing. Exercise proved vital for mental health during this uncertain time, reducing depression risk, with 92% of participants reported staying motivated to keep active.

Utilizing the MoveSpring platform, participants synced their fitness devices or manually logged steps, with options to convert other physical activities into step counts.

Hugely successful, this challenge not only achieved its goal of raising awareness for organ & tissue donation but also created a sense of purpose among participants worldwide, at a time when it was needed most.

MAKE YOUR STEPS COUNT FOR ORGAN DONATION

In 2017, the WTGF held the first Fit for Life! Billion Steps Challenge, proudly supported by Astellas Pharma Inc.

The challenge ran over 90 days and was designed to bring the worldwide transplant community together to do something for themselves – to improve their health and fitness and make healthy living their new ‘normal’.

Knowing the importance of an active community around recipients, the challenge was also open to the entire transplant community, including living donors, donor families, medical professionals, carers, family and friends. The call to action was sent out across the globe to the World Transplant Games Federation community and friends and the response exceeded all expectations. 1570 participants joined into 241 teams, representing 33 countries from around the world.

A massive 810,850,047 steps were collectively achieved, demonstrating to the world that transplant recipients are serious about their health.
