New Zealand’s Transplant Community Continues to Build Through Sport, Connection and Gratitude

Across New Zealand, transplant recipients, living donors, families, and supporters continue to strengthen a community built on resilience, connection, and the shared experience of life after transplant.

Through the work of the New Zealand Transplant Games Association (NZTGA), individuals from different backgrounds and transplant journeys are coming together through sport, remembrance, and community initiatives that continue to grow in both meaning and impact.

A Community Built on Shared Experience

For many involved in New Zealand’s transplant community, participation extends far beyond competition.

Sport remains an important part of the journey, but equally significant is the sense of belonging that the community provides.

Across the country, transplant recipients and donor families continue to connect through local events, national gatherings, and shared activities that celebrate life after transplant while supporting one another through the challenges and milestones that follow.

A Year Guided by Purpose

As the NZTGA looks ahead through 2026, the association has placed strong focus on a set of core values designed to guide its members and strengthen the community.

These values include:

  • Gratitude — recognising donors and the gift of life
  • Integrity — supporting one another with honesty and respect
  • Vitality — encouraging movement, wellbeing, and active living
  • Empathy — understanding that every transplant journey is unique

Together, these values continue to shape the direction of the organization and the wider transplant community across New Zealand.

Looking Ahead to Tasmania 2026

Excitement is already building for the upcoming Australian Transplant Games, set to take place in Tasmania in 2026.

For New Zealand athletes, the event represents more than international competition.

It offers an opportunity to reconnect with the wider transplant community, celebrate personal achievements, and continue demonstrating what is possible after transplant.

Athletes are expected to participate across a range of sports, including athletics, swimming, cycling, and pétanque, with preparation already underway for many participants.

Celebrating Progress Beyond Competition

While major sporting events remain important milestones, the transplant journey is also defined by everyday achievements.

For many community members, success may come through completing a local fun run, returning to regular physical activity, or reaching personal health goals that once felt out of reach.

These moments continue to reflect the strength and determination that define New Zealand’s transplant community.

Honouring the Gift of Life

Alongside sport, the NZTGA continues to support remembrance and awareness initiatives across New Zealand.

Through organ donation thanksgiving services and community gatherings, transplant recipients, donor families, and supporters come together to honour those whose decisions made these journeys possible.

These moments serve as an important reminder that behind every athlete, every milestone, and every second chance, there is a donor story that made it all possible.

A Shared Message

Across New Zealand, transplant sport continues to represent far more than competition.

It represents gratitude, resilience, community, and the opportunity to live fully beyond transplant.
