Media Release: 12th World Transplant Winter Games 2024

Dr Giuseppe Vanacore, The President of ANED, and Liz Schick, The President of the WTGF, announce the opening of registration for the 12th World Transplant Winter Games in Bormio, Italy.

Dr Giuseppe Vanacore, President of the National Association of Haemodialysis, Dialysis and Transplantation APS (ANED), is pleased to announce the opening of registrations for the 12th World Transplant Winter Games, conceived and promoted by the World Transplant Games Federation (WTGF).

Taking place in Bormio, Italy, from 03 – 08 March 2024, these Games are an opportunity for transplanted athletes from around the world to compete, celebrate life and support organ donation.

The World Transplant Winter Games are open to all recipients, aged 4 – 80+ years, of life-supporting solid organ and bone marrow transplants which require or have required the use of immunosuppressive drug therapies. Living Donors and donor Families are also invited to join and are welcome to enter all individual events and the curling team event.

President Vanacore says: “ANED is proud to be the Italian representative of the WTGF and the organiser of the 2024 World Transplant Winter Games. We will joyfully welcome transplant recipients from all over the world to Italy, together with their families and supporters. All united in joy to witness, through sport, friendship and fun, that transplantation is an extraordinary medical-scientific victory and human solidarity.

The World Transplant Winter Games, which are returning to Bormio precisely 20 years after the edition organised by our founder Franca Pellini, are a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the strength and courage of transplant recipients and honor living donors and donor families.

WTGF President Liz Schick, a great supporter of the Winter Games, says: “My first experience of the World Transplant Games was the Winter Games in Nendaz, Switzerland, in 2001. We have organised the Winter Games twice in Anzère, the Alpine village where I live in Switzerland. What makes these games so special is the cosiness of the Winter Games. We are thrilled that our friends at ANED are organising them in Bormio. We are looking forward to meeting our winter sports enthusiasts again.’
The last Winter Games were held in Banff, Canada, just before the Covid 19 epidemic closed borders, so these games will see our Winter Games lovers reunited again for the first time. We also hope to host a TACKERS day camp for our transplant children to enjoy fun and new friendships in the mountains!”

Early Bird Registration is now open until 20 November 2023. Details on package prices, sports on offer and more information can be found by visiting the World Transplant Winter Games website: www.wtgf.org/wintergames/ or by contacting wintergames@wtgf.org
