MEDIA RELEASE – Karl Handschuch

13th June 1937 – 8 th February 2020

It is with great sadness that the World Transplant Games Federation announce the passing of Karl Handschuch. ‘Karlo’ on 8th February 2020.

Karl, a kidney recipient, was part of the founding Board of the World Transplant Games Federation and became an integral part of our leadership and history serving as a Councillor for many years.

In 1979 Karl led the first German national team to the 2nd World Transplant Games in Portsmouth, UK, and was an important member of the group that founded the first German transplant sports association in 1987. He devoted a large part of his life to the promotion and delivery of transplant sport. For many years Karl served as a member of the Board of TransDia, Germany, and was ultimately honoured as TransDia’s ‘Honorary Senior President“.

In 2017 Karl attended the opening ceremony of the World Transplant Games in Malaga, Spain, becoming one of four inaugural inductees into the WTGF Hall of Fame. He was joined by another Founding Member of the Federation, Mr Maurice Slapak. It was a fitting moment to join the Federation’s history and early beginnings with the present day.

The WTGF owe a great debt of gratitude to Karl and also to the founding members of the Federation, who include Peter Griffin and Orien Young, who have sadly passed away in recent years and are remembered each summer Games with awards in their names.

Karl has touched and improved many lives over his lifetime. The WTGF President and Board of Trustees would like to extend sincere condolences to Karl’s family and friends at this sad time.
