When You’re Told Your Kidneys Are Failing: Coping With the Emotional Impact and What Comes Next

Being told that your kidneys are failing can change everything in a single conversation. Alongside the medical information, there may be fear, disbelief, anger, grief and uncertainty about what life will look like next. Even as you try to understand the practical decisions ahead, it can be hard to explain how you feel.

Join us on Thursday 29 October at 18:00 UK time for a webinar with George Angeli that gives those feelings space. Drawing on his experience of lifelong kidney disease, dialysis and two kidney transplants, alongside his psychotherapeutic training, George will speak openly about the human side of kidney failure.

What we’ll explore

During the webinar, George will discuss:

  • The emotional impact of being told your kidney function is declining
  • The loss of control that can come with changing blood results and hospital appointments
  • The feelings that may arise when conversations turn to dialysis or transplantation
  • How kidney disease can affect identity, relationships, independence and hopes for the future
  • Why emotional support matters before a medical crisis is reached

This is not a medical-information session. It is a human conversation about experiences that kidney patients may struggle to express, and a chance for those supporting them to better understand what they may be going through.

Meet George Angeli

George Angeli is a pre-qualification psychotherapeutic counsellor with Level 6 training in Transactional Analysis and a Professional Member of UKATA. He has lived with kidney disease since early childhood, experienced dialysis and received two kidney transplants.

George founded Richmond Barbers in 2000. More than 25 years of listening to people from all walks of life helped shape his interest in emotional wellbeing and honest human conversation. Following his second transplant, he founded 50 by Richmond Barbers, a community initiative created to raise funds and support renal patients. His work was later recognised through Richmond Council’s Community Heroes Awards.

George now brings his lived kidney experience and psychotherapeutic training together to support adults affected by chronic kidney disease, dialysis, transplantation and long-term medical treatment.

Whether you are living with kidney disease or supporting someone who is, we invite you to join this thoughtful conversation.
