04 May MEDIA RELEASE: Host for the 2018 Winter World Transplant Games announced
The Winter World Transplant Games returns to the international calendar!
The President of the World Transplant Games Federation (WTGF), Mr. Chris Thomas, today announced that the Winter World Transplant Games would be back on the WTGF calendar in 2018.
The Council of the WTGF, at its council meeting on 25 April, unanimously endorsed Anzère, Switzerland, as the host of the 11th Winter World Transplant Games.
The winter games have regularly been held in the intervening year of the Summer World Transplant Games, however they did not take place in 2016.
Mr. Thomas congratulated the bidders from Anzère and Swisstransplant, the National Swiss Foundation for Organ Donation and Transplantation and expressed overwhelming confidence in their ability to deliver the games early in 2018. The dates have been set for 7-12 January 2018, with the possibility for competitors and accompanying persons to optionally extend their stay in the Swiss Alps from 6-13 January 2018 at no extra cost.
“The overall mission of the World Transplant Games Federation is to get transplant recipients from across the world active and healthy around their transplanted organ. We need recipients to remain as fit and active as possible. The Winter World Transplant Games is an important event in our calendar and provides another goal for recipients to work towards,” Mr. Thomas said.
“We were pleased to have had interest from two countries to host these games next year. Having already hosted the winter games in 2012, Anzère had the skills and experience required plus the team that runs the annual Swisstransplant TACKERS transplant kids camp. This placed them in an ideal position to deliver a games just eight months away.”
Mr. Thomas added that the WTGF council was committed to providing recipients with a winter games opportunity and it was a brilliant way to showcase the success of transplant athletes in rehabilitating to the fullness of health.
Liz Schick, WTGF Secretary and the President of the LOC for Anzère 2018, said the Local Organising Committee was looking forward to hosting the transplant family from around the world with their families to celebrate life and pay homage to our donors, surrounded by the magnificent scenery of the Swiss Alps.
